The Pride of the Peninsula

Since May 2019, our club has proudly embraced the “10 out of 10 Club” identity—reflecting both our respect for our heritage and our commitment to continuous growth. This recognition celebrates our consistent achievement of the President’s Distinguished Club Award, the highest honour in Toastmasters.

Achieving this top score for 17 consecutive years places us among the leading Toastmasters clubs not only in Australia, but across the globe. While we take pride in this accomplishment, what truly defines us is our supportive culture—where members learn, grow, and succeed together in a positive and enjoyable environment.

Our Early Years

Founded in August 1974 as the Manly Civic Toastmasters Club, our club has a rich and evolving history. Sponsored by Sea Eagles Toastmasters Club, with long-time member Graham Clark among its early supporters, the club quickly established strong foundations.

Over the years, meetings were held in various venues across the Manly area, including Manly Civic Club, Manly Rugby Union Club, Manly Memorial Club, Manly Bowling Club, Manly Vale Hotel, and Manly Masonic Club. In 1986, following a move from Manly Civic Club, the club was renamed North Harbour Toastmasters Club.

During the mid-1990s, the club faced challenges in securing a permanent venue and maintaining membership. Despite having fewer than ten members, the group’s dedication never wavered. Meetings were even held at a member’s home in Fairlight, where a relaxed and friendly atmosphere flourished—so much so that the host’s dog was humorously named an honorary member.

A turning point came in 1997 when the club established its long-term home at Balgowlah RSL Club. This partnership remains strong to this day. In 1999, the club officially became Balgowlah RSL Toastmasters Club.

With the support of the RSL, committed leadership, and the growing reach of the internet, the club experienced significant growth. In 2003, we achieved our first “10 out of 10” Distinguished Club Program result. During this period, the club adopted its enduring identity—“The Pride of the Peninsula”—symbolising confidence, excellence, and community.

Since then, successive leadership teams have continued to build on this legacy, ensuring the club remains vibrant, welcoming, and successful.
